Python tested the newly widened Stret Lock and it passed with flying colours.

The final welding was done on the paddle gear early this morning. At lunchtime, the Chesterfield Canal Trust’s historic boat Python approached. It had got stuck every time it had tried to get through in the past. This time it went like a dream, slipping in and out effortlessly.
It might only be two inches, but it will make all the difference for full sized boats which should now be able to get all the way to Kiveton Park past the idyllic hamlet of Turnerwood and up the historic Turnerwood and Thorpe flights of locks that were restored a decade ago.
This is the new wall. Note where the stonework has been shaved back. They have even roughened up the paving stones to make them less slippery.

Nearly there – even the fisherman was interested.
Python always did get in O.K.
The real test came as the water level started to drop.
No problem!
Just look at the size of that gap.
It is almost rattling around, there’s so much room.
