Our courses are based on Madeline, which is moored at Hollingwood Hub in Staveley. It is a tripboat belonging to the Chesterfield Canal Trust.

Course dates are now available upon request.

The Inland Waterways Helmsman’s Course training is over two days (minimum six hours per day) and costs £275 per person. The course is run by volunteers and thus course dates are determined by the availability of the instructor and the crew. We aim to run one course per week throughout the year by arrangement.

The first day entails instruction on the skills required (manoeuvring the boat and management of narrow locks but not exclusively).
The second day is reflection on the previous day’s instruction followed by the assessment for certification.
We can accommodate up to two students on a course.

Completion of the course usually results in a pass and the issue of a certificate.

The Inland Waterways Crew Course training lasts one day and costs £100 per person. It includes management of locks, safe mooring etc.

We can accommodate up to two students on a course.

Following booking and confirmation, payment is through our website shop and you will be provided with a RYA Inland Waterways Handbook in preparation for the course plus further useful advice from the instructor and the completion of joining forms. You will be advised to wear suitable clothing on the day according to the weather conditions. This includes suitable outdoor footwear, waterproof gear and layers of warm/cool clothing where necessary please.
