The Staveley Town Deal is an exciting opportunity for the Chesterfield Canal which will enable the first major length of restoration to take place in several years. In 2021, the Chesterfield Canal Trust was granted planning permission for the next 2.6km of restoration works, from Eckington Road to the Chesterfield Borough Council boundary just south of Renishaw. Under our current project, the works will consist of:

• 350m of restored canal channel
• A vehicle access bridge for farm and maintenance access
• A 38.5m span bridleway bridge to carry the Trans-Pennine Trail over the canal at Staveley
• A new lock
• Water supply pipework
• Upgraded footpaths and cycleways

The large majority of these works will be delivered by contractors, with works completed no later than 2025.

Derbyshire County Council has also received funding from the Staveley Town Deal. This will be used to support the first phase of Staveley Waterside, a mixed-use development centred around the Staveley Canal Basin.

This phase will include the creation of an access road, pontoons to create moorings, a café and flexible space for small businesses.

This project should encourage more visitors to use the canal and will also create space for around ten new businesses.
