Keep Britain Tidy have announced a record number of Green Flag award winning parks and green spaces for 2013 and we are very proud to announce that Tapton Lock (Chesterfield Canal) is one of them. We are one of the very best in the UK, and that’s official! The Green Flag Award® Scheme recognises and rewards the best green spaces in the country. They are the sign of a quality park or green space, similar to the Blue Flag Quality Beach awards.
We were judged on how welcoming we are, the management of the site and community involvement, amongst other criteria. We’d like to thank our Tapton Lock volunteers and the Chesterfield Canal Trust, particularly the John Varley crew, who were with us on judging day.
We won’t be resting on our laurels though. We are aware of the need to continue to manage and improve the canal and the area around the Visitor Centre. Look out for news of our Tapton Festival on 14th and 15th September, where we will be asking visitors for their ideas on how to use and improve our events area. The Festival is a joint venture with Junction Arts, showcasing local artists and performers. There will be lots of family friendly activities and the chance to get hands on with some of them.
