We have just published a revised and updated version of Christine Richardson’s book Chesterfield Canal History Nuggets.
Christine Richardson is a lifelong waterways enthusiast. She is the author of many books and guides on the northeastern waterways of Britain. She has undertaken 35 years of research into the history of the pioneering era of canals in the third quarter of the 18th century. An active member of the Chesterfield Canal Trust she played a major role in the restoration of the historic Thorpe and Turnerwood lock flights.
Christine writes “This book contains six ‘nuggets’ of the history of the Chesterfield Canal – six short articles which are, nevertheless, accurate as they are the result of my research using original documents of the time.
“The Chesterfield Canal was one of the waterways built during the exciting pioneering era of such waterways in this country, and it is therefore one of the oldest, with a completion date of 1777.
“The other aspect which makes the Chesterfield Canal special is its location on the fringes of the national waterways network. This has resulted in a history with a clarity not encumbered by what was happening on canals elsewhere – a waterway only affected by local developments through the centuries.
“I hope you will enjoy these “nuggets” of the Chesterfield Canal’s history, and perhaps they will be a taster for more?”
The nuggets are:
History of the Chesterfield Canal
The Unique Working Boats of the Canal
Stone for the Houses of Parliament
Norwood Tunnel – its History and Future
Lost Branches of the Chesterfield Canal
James Brindley’s Fifteen Thorpe Locks
The book has 52 pages with lots of photographs old and new.
It costs £5 and is available from our shop at Hollingwood Hub.
