Work to restore Chesterfield Canal continues in a bid to boost tourism and attract businesses and investment into North East Derbyshire.
Veolia Environmental Trust has awarded £37,500* which will go towards the manufacture and installation of new gates at Staveley Town Lock and a further £50,000 has been approved by Derbyshire County Council to complete the installation and to pay for stone copings to finish and protect the new lock walls at Staveley Town Basin.
Construction will take place throughout the year at the Staveley Basin site as work is carried out to bring the new lock and downstream wharf site into use in 2016.
Derbyshire County Council’s Assistant Project Manager for Economy, Transport and Environment Chris Beech said: “This funding is great news for Chesterfield Canal.
“A lot of hard work has gone into restoring 37 miles of the canal so far and now work can continue to develop the nine miles which is unrestored and unused by the public.
“We would like to thank all of the volunteers who have given their time to raise funds and help to physically restore the canal – an amazing 7,600 volunteer hours have been logged at the Staveley Basin site alone in the last year.
“We are working closely with neighbouring authorities in planning and undertaking the restoration and once work is complete, Chesterfield Canal has the potential to boost the local economy through attracting tourism and businesses to the area.”
The majority of the restoration work will be carried out by Chesterfield Canal Trust volunteers working in partnership with the county council.
