The Supporters’ Group had a fabulous walk up the historic Norwood flight of locks.
We met at the Angel Inn on Rotherham Road, Killamarsh and then walked a few yards up to where the line of the canal crosses the road. Here Geraint Coles, the Chesterfield Canal Development Manager, told us about the surrounding area.
We stopped at Norwood Bridge, where we were told about the three triple staircase and one quadruple staircase locks that we would see further on.
This is the top side pond just below the quadruple staircase locks. It is where construction of the canal first started, in October 1771, and is where the workshops were sited.
The area around the western portal of the Norwood Tunnel has been cleared – devastated?
We then went up the hill and stopped right by the motorway ……
…… and saw where the canal will pass underneath the M1.
Walking back down the hill ……
….. we admired the beautiful sunset, before some well-earned refreshment back at the hostelry.
