PRESS RELEASE, 15th July 2025
The Chesterfield Canal Trust is celebrating after receiving a Green Flag Award for Hollingwood Hub for the ninth year in a row.
It is one of ten sites in Chesterfield to achieve the award, which is the international quality mark for parks and green spaces.
Jim Bower, who leads the Trust’s Gardening Team at the Hub, said “We are delighted to be awarded a Green Flag again. We get lots of appreciative comments from very many members of the public, but it is very pleasing to get this official recognition for our hard work.”
Hollingwood Hub is the home of the Chesterfield Canal Trust. It includes a beautiful garden, the Trust’s Information Centre & Shop, Katey’s Coffee Shop and a large car park. The Trust runs regular public trips and charter cruises on its tripboat Madeline. CJB Training & Adventure runs paddlesports hire aided by Trust volunteers.
All 31 miles of the eastern section of the Chesterfield Canal from Kiveton Park to the River Trent at West Stockwith, which is owned and managed by the Canal & River Trust, also received a Green Flag.
Green Flag Award Scheme Manager, Paul Todd MBE, said: “Congratulations to everyone involved in Hollingwood Hub who have worked tirelessly to ensure that it achieves the high standards required for the Green Flag Award.
Quality parks and green spaces like the Hub make the country a heathier place to live and work in, and a stronger place in which to invest.
Crucially, Hollingwood Hub is a vital green space for communities in Chesterfield to enjoy nature, and during the ongoing cost of living crisis it is a free and safe space for families to socialise. It also provides important opportunities for local people and visitors to reap the physical and mental health benefits of green space.”
The Green Flag Award scheme, managed by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy under licence from the Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government, recognises and rewards well-managed parks and green spaces, setting the benchmark standard for the management of green spaces across the United Kingdom and around the world.
