This weekend saw a Waterway Recovery Group camp at Renishaw.
They had come to clear some of the scrub along the line of the canal which we will start putting back into water next year.
A good bonfire cheers everyone up.
This is far from the first time the WRGies have been at Renishaw.
This was in 2007.
This was in 2009.
This was 2014.
This was 2016.
Looking back under Barlborough Road Bridge, you could see our own Work Party’s little digger, Violet May Rawson.
This was looking for the wall that was put in place when the canal was moved when the Manchestester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway was built in 1892. This eventually became the Great Central Railway, which was closed in the 1960s as part of the Beeching cuts. Renishaw Central Railway Station was on the south side of Barlborough Road Bridge.
This is the view in 1959 of the photo a few frames up. The station is on the right.
Further on, some big trees had been cut down. Our Work Party was clearing away the brush.
Meanwhile some WRGies were tirforing out the big stuff.
This had got stuck, so had to be cut again.

Meanwhile VMR was uncovering lots of the wall …..
….. and eventually got down to the grey clay of the canal bed.
As you can see, the wing walls for the new bridge (bottom right) are not angled back to meet the old wall.
Here you can see the hole, the wingwall and the bridge.
As part of the works, the wall on the right will have to be taken down and moved to the right to allow passage for moorings.
